It’s an ad, ad, ad, ad world.
The NFL ran a two-minute commercial just before halftime of the Super Bowl, and it was a banquet-hall brawl crammed with cameos by so many of the game’s biggest stars that it called to mind the cameo-crazy 1963 film, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.”
The conceit is a black-tie dinner for the league’s upcoming 100th season. Commissioner Roger Goodell plays straight man, delivering a boring speech that may or may not be acting. Marshawn Lynch eyes a giant cake and slyly leans in to swipe a taste when he accidentally knocks a golden football from atop the many-tiered confection.
“Fumble!” yells Mike Singletary. And from there, all hell breaks loose.
The ad is a mad, mad, mad, mad romp through NFL history, with comic set pieces from Montana to Rice to a high-stepping Deion to the Immaculate Reception. Tables crash and plates smash as 44 players and ex-players from Jim Brown (oldest at 82) to Saquon Barkley (youngest at 21) join the mayhem.
Five players from Super Bowl LIII appeared in the ad, including Tom Brady and Todd Gurley. The cast included 19 Hall of Famers at filming — and that bumped up to 21 by the time the ad aired, thanks to the additions of Ed Reed and Tony Gonzalez.
The NFL did the math and said the participants gained an aggregate of 11,257 yards rushing and 115,877 yards receiving.
The ad was directed by Peter Berg of “Friday Night Lights” fame, and it looked like a fine time was had by all.
We learned that Peyton Manning is still funny, the ’72 Dolphins are still undefeated — and sometimes, the No Fun League can laugh at itself.
