An ordinary photo of an egg just won one of the internet’s most coveted titles, and it’s a largely a mystery how it all happened.
A stock-like image of a brown egg, the only post from Instagram account @world_record_egg has more than 26 million likes. That beats Kylie Jenner’s most-liked Instagram post from last year of 18 million likes announcing the birth of her daughter Stormi. Jenner’s post showed her daughter’s hand clinging to her mom’s thumb and announced the newborn’s name: Stormi Webster.
The egg post, shared on Jan. 4, wasn’t shy about trying to break Jenner’s record.
It reads: “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)!”
But, what is surprising is that it actually worked.
The account has 2.7 million followers and now boasts it’s title of “official world record holders of the most liked picture on Instagram” in its bio.
A USA TODAY request for comment from the account wasn’t immediately returned.
Jenner responded to the news of losing her title by cracking an egg on the ground. “Take that little egg,” she said in an Instagram post shared on Sunday.
